We see ads daily for various products enticing us to stop smoking, offering easier ways to kick the habit with less withdrawal symptoms. Here, we look at a number of ways to quit, and try to summarise the advantages and disadvantages of each...

 

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)

Nicotine gum, nicotine patches and nicotine replacement pipes let you maintain the nicotine your body is chemically addicted and lessen the damage to your health from the other chemicals, such as tar, in cigarettes. NRT does help in kicking the actual smoking habit, as you won't necessarily get the withdrawal restlessness associated with quitting cold turkey. However, gum and patches don't satisfy the habit that a smoker acquires; the break you maybe associate with having a cigarette, the association of holding a cigarette while relaxing. The NRT pipe, on the other hand, is a less common way, but potentially effective, way of satisfying this habit while fulfilling the nicotine intake, as you get to hold the pipe as though it were a cigarette while in taking nicotine.

 

Going Cold Turkey

Although it might seem like a daunting idea, quitting completely straight away is often the most effective way of quitting smoking. Restlessness and cravings may be higher through this method, but eventually the need to smoke ceases, without the chemical addiction to nicotine that you retain with nicotine replacement therapy.

  Cutting down... then quitting

Perhaps a smoker's favorite method - trying to cut down on the number of cigarettes they smoke each day, with the intention of quitting completely. This is great when it works, but it's important to remember that many smokers who cut down eventually let their cigarette quota creep up to it's previous level.
